sustainability, knowledge management process, brazilian companies.
Discussions on sustainability have increasingly intensified, seeking to develop knowledge to enhance sustainable development as well as competitive advantage for firms. In this context, this study aims to map the main activities in the area of sustainability in the two companies visited under the perspective of the knowledge management process (knowledge creation, storage, dissemination, utilization and measurement). The research design is based on systematic literature review on sustainability and knowledge management and multiple case studies. Two case studies were carrying out in three large companies in Brazil: a financial company and a educational company. The cases were analysed considering documental data analysis, such as procedures and companies' websites and semi-structured interviews with the correspondent heads of the sustainability areas. The discussion on the adoption the knowledge management process to structure the company's activities related to the sustainable development points out some difficulties for the firms, from which possible improvements and next researches can derive. One of the challenges faced by the companies studied is in the dissemination phase, since it is both critical to the sustainable development that the internal people are informed and convinced of the importance of the sustainability, as well as that the external stakeholders are involved to ensure the improvement of the firm's image.

The part feeding problem (PFP) is a major issue in most industry. The PFP is a special case of the scheduling problem, where the optimum number of parts and the best time for delivering the parts to the production line needs be found. In this study, a goal programming (GP) model that is based on a new mathematical model is presented. To validate the model presented here, a real problem taken from a case study in the automobile industry has been solved. The GP model solution was then compared to the solution given by the initial mathematical model, and it was found that the GP model is the more effective and applicable solution for the part feeding problem.

In this paper we consider the problem of scheduling a set of independent jobs with sequence-dependent setup times and jobs compatibility constraints on a set of parallel machines such that maximum completion time (makespan) is minimized. For this NP-hard problem, we present a variable neighborhood search (VNS) heuristic. The performance of the heuristic is tested on 60 instances with different sizes and on a real instance from an auto parts industry.

In this communication the ground handling fleet management problem at airports is considered with the aim of improving aircraft service at arrival and departure while the operational cost of the ground service fleets is taken into account. The complexity of the considered problem, as well as, operational considerations lead to propose an on-line decentralized management structure where the criticality of each aircraft demand for service is evaluated using a particular fuzzy formalism. Then after detailing the assumed collaborative scheme between ground handling fleet managers, airlines and airport authorities, a heuristic approach is proposed to solve this multi fleet assignment problem. A case study considering a large airport is discussed.

In Brazil, says that if the proceeds of royalties are not applied properly. However, this statement leads us to question whether the result produced by the actions promoted by the State government, offered to population and financed with resources coming from oil royalties are up to the amount of the royalties. In the northeastern state of Rio de Janeiro, local governments receive funds from oil royalties. It is unclear, however, whether the application of these features is effective to improve the quality of life and health of the population. Public actions of the municipalities are primarily those that determine the social order based on the generation of employment and income and the application of financial resources in health and education, which may serve as a paradigm for comparisons with results from other regions of the country, or other municipalities in the same state or in other states. This study aims to analyze qualitatively the collection of oil royalties, establishing a comparation between the results of Index FIRJAN Municipal Development - Health of the municipalities of Macae and Rio das Ostras, reflected in human development and the improvement of health of the population.

grasp, location problem, p-median problem
This paper reports the experience in designing, building and testing a new procedure for the reactive GRASP, aimed at solving the general, uncapacitated p-medians location problem. Two parameters are used to control the reaction in the search for solutions in the construction phase of the GRASP. The simultaneous use of two reactive parameters allowed to create a discipline for allocating customers to clusters of the medians: customers closer, are allocated first. The procedure established is the prelude to a real application, under development, to improve the logistics of a chemical industry. The application under development will use the capacitated version of the plant location problem addressed in this work, with modifications to include the modeling of single source. Computational Experiments were done with the algorithm developed and presented here, using data from the Beasley OR library. The results are interesting, confirming the good reputation of this metaheuristic and expanding the space it occupies in the solution of combinatorial problems of medium and large sizes that often appear in the economy.

This paper presents the development of a low cost embedded system oriented to the management of electricity in industrial environments. The main objective of this study was to develop a methodology for managing electricity (monitoring, acquisition and analysis), through the collection of electrical parameters, using techniques of digital signal processing (DSP). For this task a system (hardware and software) responsible for the acquisition, recording and analysis of signals using low cost technologies, such as microcontrollers and dsPIC embedded platforms like FriendlyARMŽ MINI2440 was developed. Finally, for data analysis, two applications were created: one using the MatlabŽ software, and another derived from the first, to run in the embedded device. Both applications used as primary technique of disturbances detection the Discrete Wavelet Transforms. As a result, there was the creation of a complete system for monitoring and analysis of electrical parameters, serving as a tool to aid the management of electricity in industrial processes.

Economic diversification is an utterly important factor for regions that are directly or indirectly related to any productive mechanisms and seek to strengthen their foundations for the generation of jobs and income. Within this context, to invest in business preparation and maturation, especially in the ones related to the technology area, turns out to be an interesting means of diversifying a regional economy that is facing the risk of stagnation. This study addresses the diversification need of a region in South Brazil, and it equally describes the importance of the support lent to the entrepreneurs by the local university's incubator. It also conducts a case study on a company of the information technology area, recently incubated and whose major objective consists in becoming part of this economic diversification basis.

governance structure, innovative capabilities, roast & ground coffee.
This study contributes to the New Institutional Economics by showing that firms that adopt a mix of governance structure are more innovative than those that adopt single structures. In addition, this work seeks to analyze if the complementarity between internal and external governance structures influences the innovativeness of firms. Going beyond Grandori and Furnari's approaches (2008, 2010), which demonstrate that there is a relation between internal governance structures and the degree of innovativeness of firms, this paper also incorporates an external framework, in which case we posit that the innovation process involves a combination of interactions between internal and external firm governance structures. We test our model based on data from a survey of 214 Brazilian Roasted & Ground (R&G) coffee firms. To determine the combinations of elements we used the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) software fs/QCA, version 2.0 (Ragin, 2008). In allowing the identification of the organizational requirements that create greater opportunities for innovation, these results can help chart the actions of public and business policies which enable companies to improve their rate of innovation and competitiveness in their markets.

clearing function, production planning, convex programming, throughput, capacity
It is well known from the daily industrial experience that high levels of throughput in production depends on high levels of work-in-process in the systems, and that high levels of work-in-process affects production costs, decreasing expected revenues. The key element in this environment is the ability to plan and make the releases to meet the demand in the quantities needed, and in the due time. This insight clearly suggest that some times increasing production capacity is of our best interest even before it becomes tight, though the necessary information for this accomplishment are not provided by most of the used approach for these issues and, in particular, by classical linear programming models. Recently there has been having some effort to develop a framework to circumvent this drawback in the approach of linear programming using the concept of clearing function, which strives with the approach of linear programming to allow pricing capacity at low levels of utilization. However, such efforts did not included neither to cope with the new convex model directly, nor consider in the linear programming approach, the variability of the clearing function, which can significantly affect the results. These are the matter of this work.

This article introduces some concepts of costing methods, details the development of a settlement for the shipbuilding industry and provides an application example with its preliminary results. Due to data sources on resources and time employed are limited, in most cases the input parameters for the cost of building a ship are estimated. Thus a methodology for estimating the input parameters of the system based on cost uncertainty is proposed. This methodology incorporates knowledge about the vagueness and uncertainty of data on costing systems. Finally, to investigate the activity of the constructive system of the ship and its potential benefits, an analytical model was developed.

The characteristic of the national industrial development as a non developer has become dependent on the production and on the international will. The transnational companies launch their products according to the market´s interests. The economical crisis of 2008, which affected Brazil to a lesser extent, reduced the vehicles production and as a result also the auto parts. The fast recovery of the vehicles sales, already in 2009, brought imbalance in the supply of auto parts. The lack of parts or components, has brought again, as a subject, RECOF - Regime Aduaneiro de Entreposto Industrial [Customs Regime of Industrial Warehouse] under Computerized Control, which can mitigate the harmful effects of delays and even suspension of the production. The article presents an analysis of the automotive sector, it shows RECOF´s functionality and how it can work in collaboration in a crisis or permanently, contributing for an increase in competitiveness of the automotive sector.

This work aims at complementing the development of the EFM (Ellipsoidal Frontier Model) proposed by Milioni et al. (2011.a). EFM is a parametric input allocation model of constant sum that uses DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) concepts and ensures a solution such that all DMUs (Decision Making Units) are strongly CCR (Constant Returns to Scale) efficient. The degrees of freedom obtained with the possibility of assigning different values to the ellipsoidal eccentricities bring flexibility to the model and raises the interest in evaluating the best distribution among the many that can be generated. We propose two analyses named as local and global. In the first one, we aim at finding a solution that assigns the smallest possible input value to a specified DMU. In the second, looking for a solution that assures the lowest data variability.

The goal of this paper is to analyze the process of denationalization and geographical relocation of Brazil's auto-parts industry. A survey of data provided by industry associations and specialized publications and information from the authors' previous research projects were employed to analyze the relationship between automakers and their suppliers. It is possible to attest that Brazil's auto-parts industry has undergone a process of denationalization in the wake of its international reorganization, which has led to its being included in discussions about the deindustrialization phenomenon. The demands placed by automakers, coupled with the ease of importing auto-parts, have hampered the operations of domestic-capital companies in this sector, which has caused many of them to be acquired by multinationals. At the same time, it has been observed the entry of new investments from automakers, from both those established decades ago and more recent ones, which have installed new plants in regions with little or no background in auto-making. This has concurred to a shift in the geographic location of this industry in Brazil, closely followed by that of the auto-parts business.

brazilian cities, gee, local pollution, energy, social costs, sustainable transportation.
Brazilian transportation system generates negative externalities in terms of energy consumption, carbon dioxide and local pollution emissions, social costs and expenditures on infrastructure, which results in an unsustainable mobility system. The inefficient use of resources is alarming, and this trend indicates worsening the problem in the coming years. The continued expansion of Brazilian cities, which drives the demand for passenger mobility, besides the increasing access of lower income households to private cars as well as the low quality of public transportation options provide the basis for an exponential growth of external costs related to transportation. This paper aims to present the external costs and trends of the urban transportation system in Brazil. The results show a trend towards a significant increase in public expenditures, especially those concerning infrastructure, atmospheric emissions and final energy use over the last 8 years. The conclusion introduce the idea of a more sustainable transportation system, in which public transportation is privileged. Therefore, Brazilian cities could save their financial and environmental resources.

environmental sustainability, systemic language, environmental management, textile, brazil and portugal.
By systemic language is possible to understand how a macro environmental management system of a country destined to an industrial activity, such as the textile industry. Environmental sustainability is beyond the understanding of some mathematical formulas or rules of conduct applying pre-established, but requires well-defined rules and behaviour with linear logic to permit a simple understanding of the environmental objectives. The systemic language when applied to models of environmental sustainability allows you to present nuances of feelings, emotions, perceptions and intuitions and even acts of coercion, which are present in all real systems. In these situations is that the systemic approach is needed so that there is understanding of the phenomena that take place in every period of history. The textile industry in a given macro-regional (environmental, hydrology, population density, degree of pollution, environmental agencies, level of treatment and so on.), It produces situations of environmental management that are highly dynamic. Through language systemic link diagrams can be constructed, representing the actions and reactions that follow in each of the textile centres of Portugal (Minho region) of Brazil (Blumenau (SC), Americana (SP) and Nordeste). From the diagrams it was possible to link sustainability analysis between two systems of environmental management and highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each model. The analysis of result shows that in terms of technology models are equivalent, but in terms of macro management of environmental public's views in each model are very different, especially the business and cultural nature. In both environments (models) to environmental sustainability has yet to evolve a lot in terms of responsibility and commitment to the environment to achieve environmentally correct models

Although the wind turbines are nowadays the principal source of wind energy production, the technical information publicly known about these machines is still very scarce. Information related to failure modes, (un)availability and maintenance costs of these systems remain confidential and only the manufacturer has knowledge about them. To be able to optimize the efficiency, to guarantee the security and to negotiate better warranty and maintenance contracts, it is necessary to know more information about the operation and maintenance and replacement costs of subsystems of a wind turbine. Thus, based on two years of operation, this paper exhaustively analyses an active power control system, of 21 identical wind turbines, installed in Portugal, reflecting on its operation, availability and maintenance and replacement costs, obtaining an estimate for the total maintenance cost of an active pitch control device.

The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) methodology focuses on major critical issues of modern organizations, whether profit-making or not. The effective measurement of the performance of the latter is given by the evaluation of the successful implementation of corporate strategy. The main objective of this work is to present the development of a strategic performance measurement system for a non-profit organization, whose study object is the Association to support the communities of Field-AACC, in the context of the BSC methodology of Kaplan and Norton. This case study is exploratory, qualitative and descriptive nature, and diagnoses the consistency of strategic map in an organization, based on the strategic planning of 2010 to 2012. Initially, it was performed a literature review covering the main aspects of strategy and performance assessment Maps involving the translation of the BSC and the evaluation of the strategy. The results obtained indicate on balancing and alignment of strategic objectives, low relationship of causality of the map, strategic communication inadequate and fragmented. For respondents the organizational culture is the biggest factor preventing for structuring a management model from strategic indicators and the process should begin by non-financial indicators gradually. The performance indicators of the AACC/RN depict more meritocracy that the operating procedures of the social projects in the context of the strategic map determined in a short-term vision over the long term. However, there is evidence of improvement and strategic performance management taken as the basis of both the planning and the strategic map structured. For both, the nonprofits need to adopt a form of management that enable the planning, establishment of goals and targets that allow the continuation of its activities, and managing instruments that can measure the financial and non-financial performance, in order to develop strategic actions for its growth and sustainability.

This work presents a contribution to the decision support method for planning and administration of land use, with the concept of soft decision tree. The results are interactive maps of suggestion for land use. The source data are obtained from field survey and from thematic maps, combined in geographical information system environment. The data are stored in geodatabase, and operated by fuzzy logic. The information contained in the geodatabase is managed by a developed interface software (ALDA) that aggregates and analyzes the variables by a soft decision tree, using the fuzzyTechŽ and MSAccessŽ softwares. The resulting data are then processed in ArcGisŽ, generating the interactive map of suggestion for land use. The application and validation of the proposed method is accomplished with the elaboration of the interactive map of suggestion for land use on the Island of S?o Francisco do Sul, Southern Brazil.

The international financial crisis of September 2008 and May 2010 showed the importance of liquidity as an attribute to be considered in portfolio decisions. This study proposes an optimization model based on available public data, using Markov chain and Genetic Algorithms concepts as it considers the classic duality of risk versus return and incorporating liquidity costs The non-linear models were tested using Genetic Algorithms with twenty five Brazilian stocks from 2007 to 2009. The results suggest that this is an innovative development methodology and useful for developing an efficient and realistic financial portfolio, as it considers many attributes such as risk, return and liquidity

The gradual development of the control systems and management of information about the organizations environment through measurement systems made, in this day and age, the reflection of reality. For the Brazilian franchise system this relationship is not different, evidenced by the variation of more than three times the amount raised in comparison to gross revenues achieved since 2001. Given this scenario of growth, this article has for primary objective to propose a performance measurement system for a segments of existing franchises in Brazil, through the elaboration of indicators related to external factors considered business critical success factors, based on financial and non-financial data made available publicly by the Brazilian Franchising Association (ABF). As a result, five performance indicators were developed for the system in question, in addition to the application of this model in a specific thread within the franchise system for the purpose of analyzing the information obtained and testing the reliability of the parameters used, identifying both that the model is reliable in accordance with the criteria established.

discrete event simulation, resource allocation, performance evaluation in port terminals.
Storage port terminals are commonly used when a great quantity of steel pipes needs to be loaded onto barges to meet a specific demand. In this scenario, the allocation of cargo handling resources should be efficient to ensure that the loading of pipes occurs in the shortest possible time, thus reducing the total berthing time and the high port charges costs. Thus, the performance of the pipe loading operations is directly related to the yard productivity, which should ensure a continuous flow of pipes from the storage yard to the marshalling area. Therefore, this paper uses a discrete event simulation methodology in order to solve the problem of resource allocation of trucks, cranes and forklifts through modeling different allocation scenarios as to reduce total operations time followed by a verification of the need for investments in terminal. The following allocation scenarios were evaluated: scenario 1, maintaining the current system in the port terminal with the rental of one unit of mobile harbor crane equipment; scenario 2, rental of two units of mobile harbor crane equipment and scenario 3, rental of three units of mobile harbor crane equipment. This case study followed the steps of traditional discrete event simulation approach, such as: defining the object of study and the production system, the data collection and analysis, the formulation of the logical model, the implementation of the model in computation and validation in computation environment. A brief financial analysis is presented through the analysis of the scenarios proposed by the simulation model.

neuro-fuzzy, dependability, energy industry
The vision of continuing and increasing demand for energy to meet society's needs, with competitive cost and adequate availability indicates that the energy industry is one of the most important for the development of a nation. Like any large project, the developments in this area cause rapid and radical transformations in society, leading to profound changes in land use, employment, transportation etc.. It is in this scenario that the analysis of dependability in complex systems admits relative degree of importance because, besides contributing to the decision-making process, generates information for understanding the interactions of the system with its surroundings while minimizing its negative impacts. Therefore, this paper describes the development of a model that allows to associate qualitative and quantitative data, to evaluate the dependability of complex systems in the energy industry, catching up the inaccuracies of expert opinions using Neuro-Fuzzy Networks. Such a model is validated in a case study at a large company in the field, where the object of analysis was a critical component of fundamental importance for captation/generation power in oil drilling platforms.

open innovation; knowledge sources; innovation capability
Open innovation is a concept that means that companies go outside their boundaries to identify, capture and leverage external knowledge sources to complement the internal innovation capability. Although the concept is gaining significant attention from both the academy and business managers, the implementation of the concept still carries many challenges. Companies should have answers to three basic questions related to open innovation - what, when and how - in order to be able to understand and adapt the initiative to the organizations´ objectives. The aim of this paper is to investigate, through a case study approach, in four companies established in Brazil, how they are dealing with these three basic questions about open innovation. Although the results cannot be generalized, it seems to indicate that the learning cycle and the appliance of new technologies are the key to achieve the desired results.

The objectives of this research are twofold: a) identify the most common information disclosed on the sustainability reports of Brazilian companies listed in ISE versus companies listed in Novo Mercado and the information found in the literature; b) verify the level of adherence to the GRI indicators these companies are using in their reports and what are the differences between the two lists of companies. Sixty companies were chosen due to the nature of the stock exchange indexes: ISE - represents companies with good sustainability practices and Novo Mercado - represents companies with the highest level of corporate governance practices; both are part of BM&FBovespa (Brazilian Stock Exchange) indexes. The GRI guidelines were used as framework to analyze the reports. For the first objective, the content analysis was used and the information presented in each of the 60 reports was classified in four categories of scoring according to its level of disclosure: from 0 (no coverage) to 1 (integrated coverage), with 0,25 (sketchy), 0,5 (systematic) and 0,75 (extensive) between those two. The second objective was addressed with an analysis of the indicators disclosed in the reports of those companies that claimed be using the GRI indicators. The score given was 0 (not reported), 0,5 (partially reported) and 1 (fully reported), as suggested by GRI itself. When analyzing quantity and quality of information reported, the results show that companies listed on ISE tend to get much better scores than companies from Novo Mercado. ISE companies ended up with an average score of 54% for the economic dimension, 48% for the environmental dimension and 63% for the social dimension. Novo Mercado companies received 31%, 18% and 23% respectively. ISE companies tend to use the GRI model more than Novo Mercado companies. The results show that they tend to report the indicator fully or not report at all (52% of all indicators were fully reported, 33% were not reported and only 15% were partially reported). The results reveal that sustainability reports still have a big room for improvement, which echoes within the literature analyzed. ISE companies tend to disclose more and with better quality. Companies need to disclose their information in a more integrated way, addressing sustainability issues under the scope of business strategy.

While technological diffusion has been extensively studied in various segments under a systematic treatment innovations, new developments and implications for studies are emerging, not only diffusion phenomena themselves, but also for long-term studies that converge to competitive differentiation and growth productivity. This paper aims to present an investigation of technology and innovations in bovine genetics at the beginning of the century, whose technological frontier has not only allows us to identify the genetic value of the animal and sex, and to characterize the gain productive, competitive advantage and degree of learning acquired innovations in this segment. And, two main hypotheses of technological change emerge from the results of this study. One is the possibility of learning, namely that technological innovation comes from the experience of a practical nature. It was noted that advances in technology are attributable to variations of cumulative experience with the management of bovine reproduction and added to the laboratory advances in genetic sexing reach of the animal from the separation of chromosomes X and Y. It is concluded that technological development is an evolutionary process, which is best understood in terms of its own internal logic that results in significant technological advances to the farmer for being responsible agent in the selection of new breeding of high genetic value, and there is also the learning gain in the accumulation of knowledge among all agents developers, to the point that competitive differentiation becomes a consequence of technological innovation in this segment.

Given the strategic relevance of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) for organizations nowadays and the lack of instruments customized for the business-to-consumer (B2C) market in general, the main objective of this study is to develop and validate a reliable and valid scale to measure customers' perceptions regarding aspects they consider relevant in their relationship with companies in general that might influence their shopping experiences. A study have been conducted with an American samples for the development and validation of the Customer Relationship Management Scale (CRMS) using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The scales' reliability was assessed through Cronbach's alpha (EFA). The result was a one-factor model with high-reliability and good fit. This research is a starting point to provide a comprehensive measure of customer relationship management based on customers' perspectives.

wind farm, system for wind energy production, wind turbine, wind potential
One of the ways to diversify the power grid and reduce its dependence on non-renewable energy sources is through the use of systems that produce wind energy. Wind energy is defined as the kinetic energy contained in moving air masses (wind). It can be harnessed by converting the translational kinetic energy into rotational kinetic energy, with the use of wind turbines. Currently, the growing demand for wind energy is being driven by a number of factors: the context of supply and demand for energy on a global scale, environmental issues, especially climate change, and the evolution of the technology in the wind energy sector. The object of this paper is the study of a wind farm, located in the municipality of S?o Francisco do Itabapoana - RJ - Brazil. The objective of this research is to identify and describe in detail the main factors that make up systems that produce wind energy. This research opted to use the case study methodology since the case study analyzes an individual, family, group, or community in order to perform an in-depth inquiry so as to examine the life cycle or some particular aspect of the object being studied. During data analysis, the research perceived that a wind energy production system is composed of three fundamental factors: a region with wind potential suitable for the production of energy; energy turbines appropriate for the wind potential in the region; as well as a highly qualified management and maintenance team.
